Micro Needling
Cosmetic Needling
Ready for a skincare glow-up that feels like a secret superpower? The real game-changer between cosmetic needling and microneedling lies in the needle depth—think of it as the difference between a gentle whisper and a bold shout to your skin cells! This depth switch is the key to how your skin throws a rejuvenation party, deciding how often you can hit repeat on these treatments without tipping the balance.
Here’s the magic: cosmetic needling sparks the release of growth factors, the superstar proteins that kickstart cell renewal and skin revival. Imagine tiny microchannels opening in your epidermis, creating a buzzing network where your skin cells exchange high-energy growth and healing messages. But the real showstopper? Your fibroblasts—those collagen-making dynamos—spring into action, churning out fresh collagen like your skin’s own personal factory. The result? A dazzling transformation that’s more than skin-deep—it's a full-on youthful revival!
Medical Needling
Microneedling isn’t just a trendy skincare buzzword—it’s an absolute game-changer for your skin’s health and youthfulness. Also known as collagen induction therapy or medical needling, this procedure goes deep, puncturing both the epidermis and the dermis (the skin’s VIP lounge). By creating microchannels deep within your skin, medical needling kickstarts your body’s natural healing squad: the myofibroblasts—think of them as microscopic skin cell ambulances rushing to fix the damage.
But here’s where the magic really happens: this healing response unleashes a flood of growth factors, sparks a surge in collagen production, and creates a cellular conversation party focused on regeneration. Collagen? Oh yes, the holy grail of plump, bouncy, youthful skin. Without enough of it, you’re basically asking your face to throw a dull, saggy disaster party.
Because the needles dig deeper, your skin’s recovery needs respect and patience. Attempting microneedling more often than every four to six weeks is like expecting your favorite TV show to drop a new season every night—impressive but impossible. Give your skin the time it needs to heal, rebuild, and glow back brighter than ever. Skipping the waiting game? Not an option if you want stellar, lasting results.
In short: Microneedling isn’t just important—it’s essential for anyone serious about waking up to skin that’s not just surviving, but thriving. Your collagen—your skin’s unsung hero—demands this kind of attention. So, prep to microneedle smart and watch your skin’s glow go from zero to hero!
Nano needling
Nano needling confusingly doesn’t involve any needles. The nano cartridge is made up of microscopic silicone tipped cones. These cones create tiny channels in the very top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum.
The tiny channels are entirely invisible to the naked eye, but they allow your products to penetrate deeper into the skin.
When nano needling, you can take advantage of this and use serums to address skin concerns that occur at the top levels of the skin, such as pigmentation, dehydration and dullness.

Why use a serum?
To get the most out of your nano-needling treatments with Dr Pen, it’s recommended for you to apply a serum during and after each session. As we have mentioned in our FAQ section, microneedling creates micro-channels which allow up to 300% more product absorption! For this reason, you need to ensure you’re using a serum which will deliver some fantastic skin revitalizing ingredients to further radiate your complexion!
Due to the micro-injuries created during the microneedling process, it makes sense for the type of skincare you apply to your face to be calming. After all, microneedling does cause temporary injury to your skin, which as a result wakes up your body’s natural repair system to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Unfortunately, this also means your skin will become sensitive during and after each treatment.

As with all cosmeceutical treatments, some individuals will need to take greater safety precautions. There are some conditions that will preclude individuals from safely performing microneedling, or will mean that microneedling will need to be cleared by your medical professional first.
Some of these conditions include:
Abnormal skin conditions - If you’ve got abnormal skin conditions (such as cold sores (Herpes Simplex virus), bruised skin, eczema, rosacea, contagious skin conditions, active acne, fungal infections, rashes or skin cancer), then you should take precaution and check with your medical professional before commencing any microneedling.
Skin conditions don’t necessarily mean that you will not be able to microneedle, but precaution must be taken to avoid triggering an inflammatory skin response that will worsen any of the above conditions, so please check with your doctor first.
Keloid scarring - If you’ve ever had keloid scarring (raised scarring), you should also check with your medical professional before microneedling.
Microneedling stimulates a trauma/healing response in the skin, so if your skin’s natural response is to produce a keloid scar, microneedling may trigger an undesirable response.
Medications - If you’re taking medications such as accutane, antibiotics, antidepressants, medications that cause photosensitivity or high blood pressure, please consult your medical professional before commencing microneedling.
Some medications will mean that you are unable to microneedle, others will simply mean that you can microneedle with caution under your doctor’s guidance. It’s crucial to double check this suitability first before you start microneedling.
Cosmetic treatments - If you’re undergoing cosmetic treatments including chemical peels, laser, cosmetic surgery, filler injections, or cosmetic surgery, it’s necessary to wait until your skin fully recovers before commencing microneedling. Make sure to check with your medical professional before you start microneedling to make sure it will not interfere with any of your cosmetic procedure results.

After microneedling, your skin will probably turn red or pink and might bleed slightly (called petechiae). It may also look a bit blotchy. Don’t worry, this will pass! Your skin might be swollen, and you could get some bruising, especially on thin skin like around the eyes or chest.

Day after treatment: cleanse gently, moisturise well. Avoid fragranced or active products (vitamin C, Retinols), acids, scrubs, and toners to prevent irritation. Skin may swell, bruise, peel, or flake—moisturise to ease dryness and tightness. Avoid exercise, sweating, swimming, and makeup for 24 hours. Use high SPF sunscreen and avoid sun exposure.
48 hours after: gently exfoliate dry skin (no chemical or physical scrubs) to speed healing, if skin isn’t sensitive. Continue moisturizing twice daily. If sensitive, skip exfoliation—the flakiness will fade naturally.
